Fourth of May

May 4 is the annual Memorial Day in the Netherlands. Most towns have public gatherings and commemorate victims of World War 2 and other armed conflicts with two minutes of silence at 8 p.m. The country’s largest gathering, attended by the Queen and other officials, is held on Dam Square in Amsterdam.

In the town of Huizen, the commemoration is preceded by a procession starting at the local war memorial and ending at the monument honouring the resistance. Here, the mayor delivers a speech and the last living members of the WW2-resistance place floral wreaths on the monument.
